Vlad

I was born in Prague, Czech Republic and lived in Geneva before moving to the United States with my family at the age of 8. After a few years in the California Bay Area we moved to Seattle where I attended high school and the University of Washington.

My background in in still photography and I got my start rather late, as the photo editor of the college yearbook. After graduating, I moved back to Prague for a few years (like many Americans did!), traveled throughout Europe, freelanced for a variety of publications and worked as photo editor for the Prague Post.

Upon returning to the states I became a staff photographer at a small daily newspaper in southern New Mexico, where I won numerous awards from the Associated Press, and now I am a wedding photographer and filmmaker based in Santa Fe.

Years ago I started to recognize the power of video with clips shot with the movie mode of a Fuji 602 digital camera, editing in Adobe Premiere (I have since moved to FCP) and I think it’s kind of funny that it’s actually the movie mode of another still camera, the Canon 5D Mark II, that is now fueling my passion for video!

In the last couple of years I’ve been very luck to have had a chance to travel to some great locations for wedding video shoots, including Las Vegas, Antigua and Cabo San Lucas, working alongside Ben Chrisman, an amazing still photographer from San Francisco. The Cabo wedding was a 5-day extravaganza that was also covered by the WE Channel for their Platinum Weddings series.

I approach my video projects in the same way as my photography, framing the shot as I would a still and letting the action happen in the frame. I try to work in an unobtrusive style while looking for natural light and real emotion. I’m very excited about being part of this blog and contributing posts throughout the year, so stay tuned!!

p.s. To get a behind the scenes look at me (and to learn more about the 5D), follow EventDV TV’s feature “Keeping up With Jones” as I am featured in April, 2009.  Episode 1 is below:
